St. Angela Merici Family Advent Mass

As we are in the third week of Advent, we will be having a Family Advent Mass to celebrate the Christmas Season. All families of St. Angela Merici Catholic School are invited to celebrate our Faith, on Wednesday, December 21st at 6:45 pm at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church.

After mass we will be gathering downstairs in the church hall for some cookies, coffee, juice and fellowship.

If you can attend, it would be fantastic to see everyone, as there really is no better place to be during the Christmas season, than in a Catholic Elementary school community celebrating our Faith.

Bottle Flipping Challenge

St. Angela Merici #grade8sam Bottle Flipping Challenge

As bottles have been flipped incessantly since September, I figured we should try to incorporate the "madness" into some kind of a math lesson. After thinking it through, and really connecting a variety of expectations from the Ontario Math Curriculum, this is what I came up with...

The end result was a fantastic math culminating activity that incorporated everything from volume of a cylinder, to algebraic reasoning. It was a fantastic mini unit that truly maximized student engagement.

Check out some videos of students totally engaged in learning and consolidating their math concepts.

The Giver #grade8sam Language

We are starting to read, "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. The Giver is a 1993 American young-adult utopian/dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses. The novel follows a 12-year-old boy named Jonas. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the past memories of the time before Sameness, as there may be times where one must draw upon the wisdom gained from history to aid the community's decision making. Jonas struggles with concepts of all the new emotions and things introduced to him: whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is even possible to have one without the other. The Community lacks any colour, memory, climate, or terrain, all in an effort to preserve structure, order, and a true sense of equality beyond personal individuality.

The Giver won the 1994 Newbery Medal and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide as of 2014.

In 2014, a film adaptation was released, starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep and Brenton Thwaites The novel forms a loose quartet with three other books set in the same future era, known as The Giver Quartet: Gathering Blue(2000), Messenger (2004), and Son (2012).

Technology and Mathematical Explanation

Here is a great example of how our students @SMCDSB_SAM have been using technology to explain their mathematical thinking. #grade8sam students had to choose once concept we discussed in class during our first unit in math. Once a topic was chosen, they used the google app screencastify to come up with an online tutorial for their classmates explaining a topic. This also acted as an assessment of learning as the students were able to explain what they have learned over the passed few weeks.

St. Angela Merici Thanksgiving Food Drive

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and the 2nd annual SAM Thanksgiving Food Drive is underway.

Our Food Drive will run from Tuesday, September 27th to Friday, October 7th. Food will be collected and displayed in the school foyer in front of the library. We are asking for each student to try to bring in 1 item.

Last year, with this humble request, we raised a tremendous amount of food to donate. All food collected will be donated to the Bradford Helping Hands Food Bank.

"For it is in giving that we receive." Prayer of Saint Francis
Thank you for your generosity.

Virtual Reality Goggles- Google VR

We are working on getting a class set of Virtual Reality Goggles, made by Google to help us explore various elements of our grade 8 curriculum. VR Goggles can allow students to explore places by using various apps on both Android and IOS.

Currently, we are looking at population distribution patterns in Geography, and the VR goggles allow students to explore what different cities look like around the world.

What is a Mindset, more specifically, a Growth Mindset

Every so often a truly groundbreaking idea comes along. This is one.

Mindset explains:
- Why brains and talent don’t bring success
- How they can stand in the way of it
- Why praising brains and talent doesn’t foster self-esteem and accomplishment, but jeopardizes them
- How teaching a simple idea about the brain raises grades and productivity
- What all great CEOs, parents, teachers, athletes know

Mindset is a simple idea discovered by world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success—a simple idea that makes all the difference.

In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong.

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities.

Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports.
